Paulina Goca é uma artista contemporânea mexicana autodidata, conhecida pela sua arte hiper-realista, mas no entanto abstrata, usando o carvão como sua principal técnica. Por meio do seu trabalho figurativo, ela tende a modificar a realidade através de fragmentos que representam o comportamento humano, o desconforto emocional e a dualidade do nosso eu interior e público, duas entidades muitas vezes em conflito.
Paulina Goca is a self taught Mexican contemporary artist known for her hyper realistic but yet abstract art, using charcoal as her main technique. Through her figurative work, she tends to modify the reality through fragments representing the human behavior, emotional discomfort and the duality of our inner and public self, two entities often in conflict.

Artist Statement
Este corpo de trabalho é um convite para um olhar mais profundo sobre essas camadas que formam quem somos, para nos livrarmos daqueles que já não nos servem mais a um propósito mas que já foram um escudo para nos proteger, questionarmos o quanto do que nos acontece é destino e que parte dele reflete apenas os nossos próprios desejos interiorizados, que tornaram-se uma realidade de uma forma subtil e inesperada.
This body of work is an invitation to take a deeper look into those layers that makes us who we are, to get rid of the ones that no longer serve a purpose but were once a shield to protect ourselves and to question how much of what happens to us is fate and what part of it is just our own internalized desires that became a reality in the most subtle and unexpected ways.

Each artist has their own sources of inspiration, what inspires your work?
A inspiração para o meu trabalho vem de sonhos, experiências de vida e comportamentos humanos que observei tanto em mim como nas outras pessoas e, acima de tudo, na valorização do corpo humano. Pretendo dar importância às coisas que normalmente não paramos para observar ou apreciar, e exaltar os menores detalhes do corpo humano; uma pestana, uma pequena verruga, aquelas veias que percorrem o nosso corpo, mostram a passagem da vida através de uma ruga.
The inspiration for my work comes from dreams, life experiences and human behaviors that I observed both in myself and in other people, and above all, the appreciation of the human body. I intend to give importance to things that we do not normally stop to observe or appreciate, and to exalt the smallest details of the human body; an eyelash, a small mole, those veins that run through our body, show the passage of life through a wrinkle.
Como tem sido a tua evolução artistica? How has been your artistic evolution?
A arte é um reflexo do nosso ser, portanto está sempre em constante evolução. Comecei a desenhar muito jovem, por isso a mudança no meu trabalho é muito evidente; minha arte amadureceu comigo. No início o meu trabalho tinha uma abordagem totalmente hiper-realista, o que significa que estás sempre sob o controlo total sobre o desenho, deixando pouco para a criatividade, mas com o passar do tempo, encontrei minha voz e formei um estilo coerente com o que pretendo transmitir, aproximando-me mais de um realismo abstrato contemporâneo, onde me posso expressar mais livremente, modificando a forma como percebemos a realidade.
Art is a reflection of our being, therefore it is always in constant evolution. I started drawing at a very young age, therefore the change in my work is very evident; my art has matured with me. At first my work had a completely hyper-realistic approach, which means that you are always in total control over the drawing, leaving little to creativity, but as time passed, I found my voice and have formed a coherent style to what I intend to convey, edging more towards a contemporary abstract realism, where I can express myself more freely by modifying the way in which we perceive reality.
Como se reflete a tua personalidade no que fazes? How is your personality reflected in what you do?
Acho que a criação artística é, em última análise, um ponto de fuga, é o meio que temos como humanos para expressar o que não podemos dizer em palavras, e em muitas ocasiões é um mecanismo de defesa. Pessoalmente, refugiei-me na arte nos momentos mais difíceis da minha vida, para mim é uma forma de canalizar as minhas emoções, que se refletem em cada um dos desenhos que faço.
I think that artistic creation is ultimately an escape route, it is the means we have as humans to express what we cannot say in words, and on many occasions it is a defense mechanism. Personally, I have taken refuge in art in the most difficult moments of my life, for me it is a way of channeling my emotions, which are reflected in each of the drawings I make.
