Alexandre Alonso is a Lisbon based artist who as the ambitious desire to transform and shape structures of the soul into portraits. His paintings are deconstructed, in need of creating an intensity and a thin line of something that can disappear any second, or reconstruct itself in the next.

"The origins of Beauty". What this exhibition mean to you?
A procura do belo em circunstâncias não sempre perfeitas, porque são raras as vezes onde isso acontece. O mundo não é idílico (e este ano estamos a perceber isso de forma especialmente notória). Se tentarmos traduzir o belo em tudo o que é ideal, confortável (e quase todas as vezes, irrealista), estamos a perder a totalidade do que essa palavra significa e representa. Existe beleza num temporal, existe beleza na calma, existe beleza num por do sol, existe beleza numa noite escura, na tristeza, num sorriso, numa lágrima, num olhar, numa despedida...
The search for beauty in circumstances not always perfect, because they rarely are.
The world is not idyllic (and this year we are realising that in an especially notorious way). If we try to translate the beautiful as all that is ideal, comfortable (and almost always, unrealistic), we lose the totality of what that word means and represents. There is beauty in a storm, there is beauty in calm, there is beauty in a sunset, there is beauty in a dark night, in sadness, in a smile, in a tear, in a look, in a farewell...

Do you feel your painting more spontaneous and emotional?
Sem dúvida, e na aparente imprecisão de algo mais espontâneo, vem uma responsabilidade muito mais alta porque esses gestos mais “livres” são exatamente o que traduz a intensidade da obra, e o risco de erro é muito mais alto.
Undoubtedly, and, in the apparent imprecision of something more spontaneous, a much higher responsibility, because those more “free” gestures are exactly what makes the intensity of the work, and the risk for error is much higher.

Sou um pintor figurativo autodidacta com formação em arquitectura, profissão que exerci durante 14 anos e que abandonei para me dedicar em exclusivo à pintura. O meu trabalho é construído em redor do olhar e da desconstrução do seu entorno em formas com um grau de abstracção assumido, que serve de suporte à enfatização do carácter do sujeito.
I am a self-taught figurative painter with a background in architecture, a profession that I exercised for 14 years and that I abandoned to dedicate myself exclusively to painting. My work is built around looking and deconstructing its surroundings in forms with an assumed degree of abstraction, which supports the emphasis on the character of the subject.
