MOUSEION | CIAS
9 - 31 OCT, 2026

The exhibition Mouseion, by artist Cias, draws on his fascination with Greek mythology and the stories that continue to reflect the human condition across the ages. The result of an extensive exploration of the beauty and expressiveness of the human figure, it brings together works that examine themes such as inspiration, love, grief, memory, desire, courage, and the search for meaning. The title, Mouseion, means “place of the Muses” in Ancient Greek. Daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Muses were the deities associated with the arts and knowledge. This connection between inspiration and memory runs throughout the exhibition, inviting reflection on what is passed down to us and what, through artistic creation, we choose to preserve.

Carlos Mendes, aka Cias (Lisbon, 1977), develops an artistic practice in which drawing, painting, and tattooing intersect in an exploration of the body as a space of representation, memory, and narrative. Tattooing occupies a central place in his visual language. In his portraits, tattoos appear as inscriptions that go beyond the ornamental: they are marks that evoke characters, stories, myths, and cultural references. Cias’s interest in history and ancient art leads him to seek, in the symbols and representations of the past, elements that continue to shape the contemporary imagination. In 2024, he also began teaching Drawing and Painting, alongside his artistic practice and tattoo work.
