Cias é um tatuador apaixonado por arte e história. Ao longo dos últimos anos tem vindo a desenvolver as suas técnicas de desenho e pintura, conseguindo conjugar estas duas formas de arte que tanto o satisfazem.
Cias is a tattoo artist who is passionate about ancient art and history. Over the last few years he has been developing his techniques in drawing and painting, managing to combine these two art forms that satisfy him so much.
Tatuador ou apenas artista? Tattoo artist or just artist?
Vejo ambos como uma continuação um do outro, uma relação de influência mútua progressiva. Como tatuador sinto uma pressão acrescida porque no fundo tatuar é como uma arte de performance “ao vivo”, bem como o facto da obra tatuada ser quase sempre uma cooperação entre mim e o colecionador, tornando a efetivamente uma obra colaborativa. Ainda assim existem milhares de tatuadores de talento fenomenal a quem nada mais posso chamar do que Artistas.
I see both as a continuation of each other, a relationship of progressive mutual influence. As a tattoo artist I feel an added pressure because in the end tattooing is like a performance art “live”, as well as the fact that the tattooed work is almost always a cooperation between me and the collector, effectively making it a collaborative work. Still, there are thousands of tattoo artists with phenomenal talent that I can call nothing more than Artists.
As tatuagens dos teus personagens são simbolismos das histórias que pretendes contar. Assim como os tivesses a tatuar? The tattoos of your characters are symbolism of the stories you intend to tell. As you were tattoo them?
Em parte sim, e em muitos casos utilizo exatamente o mesmo método que, enquanto tatuadores, usamos para conceber uma tatuagem personalizada. Tal como acontece com as pessoas que tatuo, muita vezes acabamos por aprofundar a ligação que temos com elas através das infindáveis horas que dedicamos ao trabalho e á comunicação.
In part yes, and in many cases I use exactly the same method that, as tattoo artists, we use to design a personalized tattoo. As with the people I tattoo, we often end up deepening the connection we have with them through the endless hours we dedicate to work and communication.

Sem dúvida! Para mim a experiência foi incrivelmente reveladora, e senti que me deixou com vontade de aprofundar outras matérias, bem como exprimir muitas outras ideias interessantes no futuro. Nesta exposição quis prestar homenagem ao reinterpretar e celebrar obras clássicas e intemporais de grandes mestres da nossa cultura e história, e à arte que pratico no dia a dia. Sendo um apaixonado por história e admirador de arte antiga, pareceu-me lógico combinar ambos com conceitos que giram em torno das histórias e mitos presentes na génese de grande parte da nossa cultura.
Muitas vezes tratou-se de tentar imaginar as motivações de uma determinada personagem para escolher temáticas adequadas. Tentei sempre que possível fazer um trabalho de pesquisa que me permitisse, ora aprofundar a mensagem ou história da obra original, ora celebrar tipos de tatuagens ancestrais e milenares.
No doubt! For me, the experience was incredibly revealing, and I felt that it made me want to go deeper into other subjects, as well as express many other interesting ideas in the future. In this exhibition I wanted to pay tribute to the reinterpretation and celebration of classic and timeless works by great masters of our culture and history, and to the art that I practice on a daily basis. Being passionate about history and an admirer of ancient art, it seemed logical to combine both with concepts that revolve around the stories and myths present in the genesis of much of our culture. Often it was a matter of trying to imagine the motivations of a certain character to choose appropriate themes. I tried whenever possible to do a research work that would allow me, now to deepen the message or history of the original work, now to celebrate types of ancestral and millennial tattoos.

Nesta exposição apresento pessoas que marcaram e progrediram a múltiplos níveis a humanidade como um todo... nem sempre foram os modelos ou heróis que gostaríamos ou idealizamos. Como humanos que eram, e tal como nós, eram indivíduos complexos com falhas semelhantes às nossas. Para mim é aparente que o potencial humano para a criação ou destruição são imensuráveis e, em alguns casos ambos, estão até presentes na mesma pessoa. Esta dicotomia, não passa de uma ilusão vista por uma lente seletiva que nos foca nos aspetos extremos e pela qual perdemos toda a cor que existiu em seus tempos de vida.
For this exhibition i present people that have left a mark and have progressed humanity as a whole at multiple levels, aren’t always the role models or heroes we would have liked or idealized. Like the human beings they were, just like us, they were flawed and complicated individuals. It's apparent to me that the human potential for creation and destruction is immeasurable and in some cases both can be seen in a single person. This dichotomy is but an illusion viewed through a selective lens that focuses us on the extreme aspects and is the reason why we lose all the color of their lives.
