A arte de João Fortuna reflete a atualidade contemporânea. Tecnologia, revolução e solidão são temas dominantes. As suas peças são construídas em camadas onde uma imensidão de imagens criam estórias tridimensionais que desafiam nossos olhos. Licenciado em História da Arte pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, procurou formação complementar nas áreas de Marcenaria, Embutidos e Tallha (Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo), Desenho (Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes), Conservação e Restauro, Pintura e Gravura. Mas foi na colagem, considerada uma das expressões mais pobres no universo das artes plásticas, que encontrou a sua forma de comunicação. Através de uma renovação técnica e temática criou uma linguagem estética própria, onde imagens e encenações maximalistas se vão construindo arquitetonicamente entre os diferentes layers de madeira, numa espécie de universo multidimensional.
João Fortuna's art reflects the current contemporary era. Technology, revolution and loneliness are dominant themes. His pieces are built in layers where an immensity of images create three-dimensional stories that challenge our eyes. Degree in Art History by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, he sought additional training in the areas of Carpentry, Embutidos and Tallha (Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation), Drawing (National Society of Fine Arts), Conservation and Restoration, Painting and Engraving. But it was in collage, considered one of the poorest expressions in the world of plastic arts, that he found his form of communication. Through a technical and thematic renovation, he created his own aesthetic language, where maximalist images and stagings are built architecturally between the different layers of wood, in a kind of multidimensional universe.

Artist Satement - Solo Exhibition 2024
Estruturas em desintegração, partidas, rachadas, frágeis. Fragmentos de matéria fundem-se estruturalmente com narrativas poéticas e provocativasde um Mundo e de uma sociedade à beira da rutura.
‘’Recording’’, ‘’Tecnocracia’’ ou ‘’Loop’’ são algumas das obras que compõem MILLENNIUM, uma exposição onde as obras tridimensionais transcendem o simples ato da colagem e nos fazem mergulhar na complexidade das relações sociais, urbanas e tecnológicas. Cada peça é uma síntese visual das tensões ocultas que fazem parte do nosso quotidiano. Através da fusão entre a matéria e a narrativa, somos confrontados com a fragmentação da realidade, onde cada pedaço de matéria é uma contradição da nossa própria existência coletiva. Estruturas que se desmoronam diante dos nossos olhos, revelando as fissuras e rachadelas que mais não são do que a nossa própria rutura social, política e emocional.
A cidade, enquanto cenário primordial das interações humanas, emerge como protagonista silenciosa destas composições que se confundem entre a realidade e a ficção. Ruas, prédios e monumentos são desconstruídos e reconstruídos num jogo de formas e significados, refletindo a dinâmica caótica e confusa dos grandes centros urbanos – a megapolis – onde somos confrontados com uma normalidade paradoxal de um presente que teima em desaparecer sob o peso do seu próprio excesso, colapsando sobre si mesmo.
MILLENNIUM é um eco visual do Mundo, é um espelho distorcido da nossa própria condição humana num tempo de grandes incertezas e rápidas transformações.
MILLENNIUM é um reflexo do nosso presente, que nos desafia a questionar, refletir e agir sobre o nosso futuro, num início de milénio que começou apenas ontem. Disintegrating, broken, cracked, fragile structures. Fragments of matter merge structurally with poetic and provocative narratives of a world and a society on the verge of rupture.
''Recording'', ''Technocracy'' or ''Loop'' are some of the works that make up MILLENNIUM, an exhibition where three-dimensional works transcend the simple act of collage and immerse us in the complexity of social, urban and technological relations . Each piece is a visual synthesis of the hidden tensions that are part of our daily lives. Through the fusion between matter and narrative, we are confronted with the fragmentation of reality, where every piece of matter is a contradiction of our own collective existence. Structures that crumble before our eyes, revealing the fissures and cracks that are nothing more than our own social, political and emotional rupture.
The city, as the primordial setting for human interactions, emerges as the silent protagonist of these compositions that blur between reality and fiction. Streets, buildings and monuments are deconstructed and reconstructed in a game of forms and meanings, reflecting the chaotic and confusing dynamics of large urban centers – the megapolis – where we are confronted with a paradoxical normality of a present that insists on disappearing under the weight of its own excess, collapsing in on itself.
MILLENNIUM is a visual echo of the World, it is a distorted mirror of our own human condition in a time of great uncertainty and rapid transformation.
MILLENNIUM is a reflection of our present, which challenges us to question, reflect and act on our future, at the beginning of a millennium that began only yesterday.

BACKCOVER: SYNOPSIS
Nesta exposição – Backcover (contracapa) – o livro torna-se a minha matéria-prima, assumindo um papel fundamental em toda a produção, não só em termos técnicos ou estéticos, mas principalmente a nível conceptual. Porque os livros nunca foram apenas meros objetos, contêm em si uma carga simbólica, emocional e afectiva… quase como elementos vivos, que despertam no ser-humano outro nível de consciência e afinidade. A partir do livro crio novas abordagens para a sua forma e conteúdo, por vezes recheando-o, outras vezes extravasando os limites físicos do próprio objecto... Destruo a obra literária para fazer nascer a obra visual. Corto, recorto, fragmento e afasto, o livro vai ganhado novas formas. As páginas dão lugar à colagem, as palavras dão lugar às imagens, numa narrativa plástica que nos transporta para o imaginário dos 18 livros que compõem esta exposição.
In this exhibition – Backcover – the book becomes my working material, assuming a fundamental role in the entire production, not only in technical or aesthetic terms, but mainly at a conceptual level. Because books were never just mere objects, they contain a symbolic, emotional and affective charge… almost like living elements, which awaken another level of consciousness and affinity in the human being. From the book I create new approaches to its form and content, sometimes filling it, other times going beyond the physical limits of the object itself... I destroy the book to give birth to the a visual artwork. I cut, dismantle, fragment and push away… the book takes on new forms. Pages give way to collage, words give way to images, in a visual narrative that transports us to the imagination of the 18 books presented on this exhibition.

Como construir uma mensagem através da desconstrução de outra? How to build a message through the deconstruction of another?
Algumas das obras que crio são um reflexo evidente da narrativa literária, aproprio-me da estória e tento aproximá-la do nosso mundo contemporâneo, das nossas problemáticas, existindo uma desconstrução da mensagem, mas nunca um afastamento em relação ao imaginário literário. Vemos isso na peça ‘’1984’’ em que estamos frente-a-frente com uma sociedade altamente controlada pelo poder, cctv e propaganda/média; assim como na ‘’Laranja Mecânica’’ onde grupos violentos fazem parte do dia-a-dia de uma Londres futurista. De certa forma, é como confrontarmo-nos com as distopias do nosso presente.
Some of the works I create are an evident reflection of the literary narrative, I appropriate the story and try to bring it closer to our contemporary world, to our problems, with a deconstruction of the message, but never a departure from the literary imaginary. We see this in the piece ''1984'' where we are face to face with a society highly controlled by power, cctv and propaganda/media; as well as in ''A Clockwork Orange'' where violent groups are part of everyday life in a futuristic London. In a way, it's like confronting the dystopias of our present. Em algumas peças a estória é diferente da original? Is the story different from the original in some pieces?
Muitas das vezes o nome do livro é o mote de partida para a criação da obra, aproprio-me dele para criar as minhas visões, elaborar novas encenações daquilo que poderia ser o seu conteúdo, em suma, crio a minha própria estória. Na obra ‘’Homens que Transformaram o Mundo’’ apresento uma mulher, Malala, vencedora do Nobel da Paz pela sua luta pela educação feminina no Paquistão; assim como na obra ‘’Servidão Humana’’ procuro apresentar uma narrativa em torno da ideia de servidão moderna de um mundo capitalista. Na ‘’Guerra e Paz’’ de Tolstoi, apresento uma espécie de mandala num jogo que saltita entre uma estrutura côncava e convexa… existe sempre uma relação entre a obra e o livro.
Often the name of the book is the starting point for the creation of the work, I use it to create my visions, create new stagings of what could be its content, in short, I create my own story.
In the book ''Men Who Changed the World'' I present a woman, Malala, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle for female education in Pakistan; as in the work ''Human Servitude'' I try to present a narrative around the idea of modern servitude in a capitalist world. In Tolstoy's ''War and Peace'', I present a kind of mandala in a game that bounces between a concave and convex structure... there is always a relationship between the work and the book.

Quem é o João Fortuna? Who is João Fortuna?
Uma licenciatura em História da Arte, inúmeras viagens, e infinitas experiências que me levaram a conhecer técnicas desde a pintura à gravura, são a base de construção da minha identidade artística. Mas foi na colagem, considerada uma das expressões mais pobres no universo das artes plásticas, que encontrei a minha forma de comunicação. Através de uma renovação técnica e temática criei a minha própria linguagem estética, onde imagens e encenações maximalistas se vão construindo arquitetonicamente entre os diferentes layers de madeira, numa espécie de universo multidimensional.
A degree in Art History, countless trips, and endless experiences that led me to learn techniques from painting to printmaking, are the basis for the construction of my artistic identity. But it was in collage, considered one of the poorest expressions in the world of plastic arts, that I found my form of communication. Through a technical and thematic renovation I created my own aesthetic language, where maximalist images and staging are built architecturally between the different layers of wood, in a kind of multidimensional universe. Como artista utilizo a arte como ferramenta de comunicação, por isso tento sempre criar uma mensagem muito direta através da minha linguagem. Todo o meu trabalho é um reflexo crítico do nosso tempo, maioritariamente um reflexo do lado negro e absurdo do mundo em que vivemos. Cada obra coloca-nos frente a frente com as falhas, os fracassos, o peso das nossas escolhas, dos nossos erros. Toda a exposição é um alerta, é um convite para uma reflexão individual de problemas comuns e globais.
As an artist I use art as a communication tool, so I always try to create a very direct message through my language. All of my work is a critical reflection of our time, mostly a reflection of the dark and absurd side of the world in which we live. Each work brings us face to face with failures, failures, the weight of our choices, of our mistakes. The entire exhibition is an alert, an invitation to an individual reflection on common and global problems.

Tento sempre escolher pessoas que se relacionem/identifiquem de alguma maneira com o assunto que abordo na obra. No quadro ‘’O filho da Indústria’’, o personagem é um antigo trabalhador da fábrica de azoto no Barreiro, trabalhou lá até a fabrica fechar; na obra ‘’A Mãe da Solidão’’ fotografo a Dona Bia de 83 anos que vive sozinha; na minha ‘’Liberdade’’ aparece a Alexandra, uma eterna revolucionária e ativista. Mas no fundo todas as obras são um misto de realidade e imaginação, de mim e do mundo.
I always try to choose people who relate/identify in some way with the subject that I discuss in the artwork. In the piece ‘’ The son of the Industry ’’, the character is a former worker at the nitrogen factory in Barreiro, he worked there until they closed; in the artwork ‘’ A Mãe da Solidão ’’ I photograph lady Bia, an 83 old woman, who lives alone; in my ‘‘ Freedom’’ appears Alexandra, an eternal revolutionary and activist. But in the end, all the works are a mixture of reality and imagination, of me and the world.
