Emanuel De Sousa (1977) vive e trabalha em Edimburgo, frequentou o Curso de Belas Artes do Instituto Superior de Arte e Design da Universidade da Madeira e obteve a Licenciatura em Artes Plásticas – Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto (FBAUP). O seu trabalho integra diversas coleções públicas e privadas e tem sido maioritariamente apresentado na Europa e Estados Unidos da América através de exposições individuais, coletivas e feiras de arte. A sua obra já foi mencionada em diversas revistas e plataformas culturais.
Emanuel De Sousa (1977) lives and works in Edinburgh, attended the Fine Arts Course at the Higher Institute of Art and Design at the University of Madeira and obtained a Degree in Fine Arts (Painting) at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) . His work is represented in public and private collections and has been mostly presented in Europe and the United States of America through individual and collective exhibitions and also in art fairs. His work has been mentioned in several magazines and cultural platforms.

Ao longo dos anos, Emanuel tem desenvolvido a sua própria técnica de pintura, chegando a transformar e remodelar os seus pincéis para trazer à tona o nervosismo e tonalidade das suas intenções em tela.
The fascination with the human figure is at the heart of Emanuel De Sousa's work. Through the painting we are transported on a journey through his mind. Over the years, Emanuel has developed his own painting technique, including transforming and remodeling his brushes to bring out the nervousness and tonality of his intentions on canvas.

O que respira o estúdio de um artista? What does it breathes on the artist's studio?
É o meu mundo, é onde me sinto verdadeiro, ligado à minha realidade, portanto, onde a minha imaginação se transforma num objeto físico, onde me sinto realmente livre. Liberdade é o que respira o meu estúdio.
Well, it’s my World, it’s where I feel true and whole, connected to my reality, where my imagination is transformed into a physical object, where I really feel free. Freedom is what I breathe in my studio.
Quem é o Emanuel de Sousa? Who is Emanuel de Sousa?
É com muito carinho que falo das minhas origens. Tenho sempre um enorme prazer de dizer e explicar que sou da ilha de Porto Santo. Estudei entre a ilha da Madeira e a cidade do Porto, em ambas universidades, cujas formações me edificaram tecnicamente e me deram a maturidade que tenho hoje. É impossível separar o meu trabalho e imaginação das memórias que tenho da minha terra, que fizeram de mim a pessoa que sou, as memórias que tenho dão-me força e propósito, resultando numa enorme entrega ao meu processo criativo.
It’s with a special affection that I talk about my origins. It’s always a great pleasure to explain I come from Porto Santo island. I’ve studied between Madeira island and Porto city, in mainland Portugal, in both universities, where i grew up academically and made the artist I am today. It’s impossible to divide my work and imagination from the memories I have back home, that made me the person I am; these memories give me strength and a porpoise, having me thrown completely to my creative process.

On your Instagram you make lots of lives streaming where you paint, teach and, several times, let loose thoughts. Like a digital diary... is this sharing important?
O trabalho de um artista é por definição uma atividade solitária; não temos um constante acompanhamento, nem com quem partilhar sucessos ou frustrações, ficamos confinados a uma redoma onde o único júri é a nossa consciência... como forma de me soltar deste sistema, muitas vezes vicioso, partilho o meu processo e trabalho com quem me quiser acompanhar, e nada melhor do que esta plataforma onde faço diretos que me ajudam a divulgar a minha obra, a lembrar que há um mundo grande la fora e que me mantém são.
The artist’s work is, by definition, a lonely activity; we don’t have a regular follow up from bosses or ,ana hers, nor do we have with whom to share frustrations or successes, we’re just confined to a space where the only jury is our own conscience... the way I found to break away from this state, sometimes vicious, is to share my process online, either by using social media platforms, or doing live videos, where who ever wants to join is welcomed. I feel that this these platforms give me a bit of sanity and realization that there’s a bigger world out there.
Quanto tempo demora a terminar uma pintura? How long does it take you to finish a painting?
Não é uma questão fácil de responder... uma tela não começa com os primeiros traços de carvão ou pinceladas de acrílico; parte tudo, vários meses antes, de uma intenção, que por sua vez cresce e é discorrida nos meus inúmeros diários gráficos, onde escrevo, descrevo, exploro, repenso e reformulo um sem número de possibilidades antes sequer de pensar em desenhar, que é a fase seguinte. Depois vêm os pequenos estudos em acrílico e papel ou acrílico e tela, e eventualmente coalesce numa tela grande, sendo o trabalho final... o qual só consigo considerar acabado quando finalmente deixa o estúdio.
That doesn’t have a simple reply... a painting doesn’t start at the easel, with the first charcoal strokes or first paintbrush dabs; it all begins many months earlier from a simple intention, that grows into a concept, a proposal, that I then describe in countless sketchbooks and diaries, by writing and sketching, as many possibilities as I can imagine, before I even consider starting with larger studies, which is the next phase. After working out dimensions, pallets, drawings, compositions, after many studies in both paper and canvas, I finally move on to the final product and paint it in a big canvas... which I only consider finished the moment it leaves my studio for a show, or a collector.
