Maltrapilhos lutam com um cão raivoso por um osso velho. Pessoas desesperadas, tentando desesperadamente sobreviver com todos os meios que conseguem reunir. Surgiram no tempo de Hogarth, em Gin Lane. Podemos ver cenas que o fazem lembrar a Londres de hoje: em Russell Square, Holborn, St. Giles, e em mil e uma outras vilas e cidades por todo o país. Um homem da classe alta mija nos pobres. Um tolo que não sabe porra nenhuma, bate palmas com entusiasmo e atira dinheiro para os pés de um macaco músico de rua. O macaco, dedilhando o lado da guitarra que não tem cordas, revela-se tão estúpido quanto o burro. Goya viu isso nos seus Caprichos. Hoje em dia, ao ligarmos a televisão, a rádio ou o Youtube podemos ver atos de burrice semelhantes a serem igualmente aplaudidos por idiotas. Um Baco gordo bêbado cavalga brutalmente nas costas de um porco, criando o caos, e destruindo tudo o que é decente ao seu redor. Podemos vê-lo a cagar no seu trono; ou a voar alto sobre as térmicas da sua imaginação febril; perdido em devaneios e fantasiando sobre a sua própria grandeza. A arrogância e a soberba abundam… e tal como o trágico Ícaro, estas personagens arrogantes são ocasionalmente queimadas e caem por terra.
Down-and-outs wrestle with a rabid dog over an old bone. Desperate people, desperately trying to survive by whatever means they can muster. They appeared in Hogarth’s time, in Gin Lane. You can see scenes reminiscent of it in the London of today: in Russell Square, Holborn, St. Giles, and a thousand and one other towns and cities up and down the land. A toff pisses on the poor. An ass, who doesn’t know the difference between shit and Shinola, claps enthusiastically, and throws money at the feet of a busking monkey. The ape, strumming the side of the guitar that has no strings, proves himself to be as dumb as the donkey. Goya saw this in his Caprichos. Turn on the television, radio, or Youtube nowadays and you can see similar dumb acts being similarly applauded by idiots. A drunken Fat Bacchus rides rough-shod, on the back of a pig, whilst creating havoc, and wrecking anything in his surroundings that is decent. He can be seen shitting on his throne; or soaring high above the thermals of his febrile imagination; lost in reverie and fantasizing about his own greatness. Arrogance and hubris abound…and like the tragic Icarus, these hubristic characters are occasionally burned and come crashing to the ground.

These thoughts and historical reference-points are the kind of thing that have fed into my studio practice over the past 7 years, and they have been made manifest in the form of sculptures, drawings, paintings and collage paintings.
