Laura Restrepo (1992, Colombia) is a Canadian-Colombian visual artist whose practice centers on hyperrealistic charcoal drawing. Through meticulously rendered portraits and figurative works, she explores themes of memory, mortality, identity, and the transient nature of human existence. Her work examines the tension between permanence and impermanence, using charcoal—a medium she describes as "dark dust"—to preserve fleeting moments and individuals against the inevitability of forgetting. Restrepo studied Visual Arts at York University and the University of Ottawa, graduating with honours. Her artistic training fostered a deep commitment to drawing as both a technical and conceptual practice, leading her to develop a distinctive body of work characterized by extraordinary realism and emotional resonance. Working almost exclusively in charcoal, Restrepo transforms a fragile and impermanent material into images of remarkable precision and depth. Her drawings serve as acts of preservation, capturing the individuality of her subjects while acknowledging the inevitability of change and disappearance. Balancing technical mastery with philosophical inquiry, her work celebrates both the fragility and the beauty of human existence.
