A obra de Jax é introspectiva e muitas vezes autobiográfica, onde textos secundários, imagens e a identidade visual de suas figuras se expressam como manifestos e celebrações de inconformidades, indo de encontro a estereótipos e estigmas. A natureza é usada em todo o trabalho da artista, como uma frágil e delicada calma contrastando com temas frequentemente dramáticos.
Jax work is introspective and often autobiographical, where secondary texts, images and the visual identity of her figures are expressed as manifestos and celebrations of nonconformity, going against stereotypes and stigmas. Nature is used throughout the artist work, as a contrasting delicate and fragile calm to what are often dramatic themes.

How would you describe your 2021 solo exhibition "FOUND" ?
FOUND é meu corpo de trabalho mais íntimo que explora um equilíbrio entre arte urbana e o meu trabalho de estúdio, fundindo organicamente a minha paixão pela arte figurativa e pela temática da natureza... murais de grande escala, detalhes insanamente minúsculos e com significados ocultos.
FOUND is my most intimate body of work that explores a balance between public street art and studio work, organically fusing my love of figurative and nature themed art... large scale murals and insanely tiny details and hidden meanings. Some of your previous bodies of work are very autobiographical. In Found you seem to be referencing a place of discovery (a state of mind) something you were searching for……
Tem sido uma jornada longa e desafiadora, um processo de aceitar e finalmente alcançar o que eu queria, deixando de lado o que os outros, e até mesmo eu, esperava de mim mesmo. Não tenho palavras para explicar verdadeiramente como estou feliz em cima de um andaime ou de um elevador, coberta de tinta e protetor solar onde a poeira gruda, onde todo o meu corpo dói de trabalhar 14 horas por dia no calor ou na chuva e frio intenso, como me aconteceu recentemente no Reino Unido. Também adoro estar no meu estúdio com um pincel nº0 pintando detalhes minúsculos, de grau científico, em aquarelas.
Eu sinto-me muito contente, satisfeita e calma no final de cada dia, sinto que encontrei um equilíbrio, algo que sempre procurei, mas que só encontrei recentemente.
It’s been a long and challenging journey, a process of accepting and finally going for what I wanted, pushing aside what others, and even I, expected of myself. I don’t have words to truly explain how happy I am up scaffolding or a lift, covered in paint and sun screen that the dust sticks to, where my whole body aches from working 14hr days in the blasting heat or rain and cold as I just had recently in the UK. I also love being in my studio with a nº0 paint brush painting minuscule details in a scientific grade watercolour.
I just feel really content, satisfied and calm at the end of every day, I feel like I’ve found a balance which is something I’ve always looked for but only found recently.

Yes, but so few genuinely find it or have the guts to go for it when they do (in my humble opinion). I’ve never been a conformist but getting older has certainly aided me in letting go more and mastering ‘The subtle art of not giving a f%#k’
Como transportas a calma e sossego do trabalho de estúdio para os murais de arte urbana? How do you bring the calm and quiet of your studio practice into your mural and public street art?
Bons auscultadores e música para abafar os sons urbanos, pois tenho os níveis de concentração de um peixinho dourado e fico muito desajeitada quando me distraio.
Além disso, o ato físico de pintar é algo realmente calmante onde fico imersa, seja qual for o ambiente ou a superfície.
Good headphones and music to drown out urban sounds as I have the concentration levels of a goldfish and I’m really clumsy when distracted.
Also the physical act of painting, it’s just a really calming thing to be immersed in, what ever the environment or surface.

What makes you happy?
O Tom e o Freddy, caminhadas insanamente longas, o Guincho de manhã cedo no inverno com o meu cão salsicha e maluco Pickle. Queijo, um bom tinto do Douro, música, silêncio, o meu espaço, mas também estar com as pessoas que adoro de verdade.
Tom and Freddy, insanely long walks, Guincho early on a winters morning with my lunatic sausage dog Pickle. Cheese, a good Douro red, music, silence, my own space but also being with the people I genuinely adore.
Quando surge o tema da "Natureza" no teu corpo de trabalho?
When does the theme of "Nature" appear in your body of work?
Sempre desenhei animais e natureza, especialmente pássaros. Quando tinha uns 8 anos, a minha mãe deu-me um livro sobre como desenhar cavalos, e desde então venho desenhando animais. Agora, com os problemas do aquecimento global e a taxa alarmante de extinção de espécies, apresento-os cada vez mais nos meus trabalhos, colocando-os no centro de um palco em sua plena magnitude e esplendor teatral.
I have always drawn animals and nature, especially birds. When I was about 8 years old, my mother gave me a book on how to draw horses, and since then I have been drawing animals. Now, with the problems of global warming and the alarming rate of species extinction, I present them more and more in my work, placing them at the center of a stage in its full magnitude and theatrical splendor.
Nas tuas últimas séries predominava a cor azul. Alteraste um pouco o registo, porquê? In your last series, the color blue predominated. You changed the registration a little, why?
Fico entediada facilmente, e precisava de uma mudança… apesar de ainda utlizar bastante azul em alguns dos trabalhos. Para além de focar-me nas cores da espécies que gosto de representar, por vezes uso cores mais quentes... na exposição "Natura Est Theatrum" (2019), a primeira que fizemos, apliquei, em alguns dos trabalhos os grupos de cores usadas no mapeamento do o aquecimento global.
I get bored easily, and needed a change ... although I still use a lot of blue in some of the jobs. In addition to focusing on the colors of the species I like to represent, I sometimes use warmer colors ... in the exhibition "Natura Est Theatrum (2019), the first that we did , in some od the artworks I applied the groups of colors used in the mapping of global warming.
Como é o teu processo de trabalho?
How is your work process?
Fotografo tudo e todos, até mesmo os estranhos com que me cruzo na rua. Imprimo as fotos e coloco-as nas paredes do meu estúdio para me inspirar. Também tenho uma grande coleção de livros de referência de imagens que venho colecionando desde muito jovem, os quais me ensinavam a desenhar e a pintar… ainda uso muitos deles no meu trabalho.
I photograph everything and everyone, even the strangers I come across on the street. I print the photos and put them on my studio walls to get inspired. I also have a large collection of image reference books that I have been collecting since I was very young, which taught me how to draw and paint ... I still use many of them in my work.

Admiro várias...é difícil. Mas por exemplo o Grou-Coroado-Vermelho (Grus Japonensis) utilizo em vários projetos de arte. É um pássaro tão elegante e mágico, que parece estar a dançar e a planar. Eles foram colocados na lista de espécies ameaçadas de extinção em 1970 e existem apenas cerca de 2500 no planeta, muito poucos em ambiente selvagem. É uma ave importante na cultura Japonesa e Coreana, sempre presente na arte tradicional desses países.
I admire several ... it's difficult. But for example the Red-Crowned Crane (Grus Japonensis) I use in various art projects. It is such an elegant and magical bird that it seems to be dancing and gliding. They were placed on the list of endangered species in 1970 and there are only about 2500 on the planet, very few in the wild. It is an important bird in Japanese and Korean culture, always present in the traditional art of these countries.
